With the wide variety of applications on numerous platforms, it is impossible to license a copy of them all. We recommend that documents created in an application we do not support be saved in the PostScript format (or PDF format) to avoid incompatibility and to ensure desired results. A PostScript file is a set of codes that is universally accepted by PostScript printers and contains all the fonts and linked files used in the document. This type of file can be printed with a PostScript printing utility without having the application that created it.
To create a PostScript file, the following simple steps must be followed:
1. The document to be printed must be in the active window.
2. For our purposes, the Linotronic 200 (for DocuTech output), the Linotronic 330 (for film output), or the LaserWriter 360 (for Laser output) must be selected as the desired PPD (PostScript printer definition).
3. Each application has the ability to print to a selected printer or to create a PostScript file. In the Print dialog box there is an option to Print to file (or Write PostScript to file). Select this option and you will see the print button change to the save button which indicates that you are about to create a PostScript file. Please be sure the following options are set correctly before creating the PS file: Page range, Resolution, Orientation, Page size, Number of copies, Composite or Separations.
4. Select Save and you will see another dialog box asking you to name the file and to select the font inclusion. All fonts should be included in the PostScript file to ensure that all fonts print as expected.
5. Copy your newly created PostScript file to a diskette or other media.
For large documents, please create PS files in small page sets (approximately 30) instead of the entire document for easier handling.
